We sadly announce the death of Nancy Thompson, age 88 on March 30, 2025 at The Eddy
Heritage House Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Troy, NY after a period of declining health.
Nancy was born Nancy Marie Kerls on November 1, 1936 in Cohoes, NY. She was the
daughter of James and Margaret Kerls. She grew up in Cohoes and attended St Bernard's
School and Keveny Academy. When her family relocated to Braintree, MA she continued her
education and graduated from Archbishop Williams High School. She went to nursing school
and proudly received her nurse's cap from St Elizabeth's in Boston, MA.
Nancy's life was dedicated to the care of others. As a young nurse Nancy worked at Leonard
Hospital and St Peter's, often the 3 to 1 shift so she could be home with her children. In the
late 1960's she taught nursing in Albany, NY through the Manpower Development and Training
Act of 1962. She was excited and honored to be part of such a important program. Later
Nancy was a school nurse teacher at Shenendehowa Central School and then Hackett Junior
High. During the summer she was "Nurse Nancy" at The Wildwood School camp program.
Nancy was the loving mother to Nancy Jean (La Bombard) Marsh and John LaBombard Jr. She
was a wonderful mother-in-law to Stephen Marsh, special Nana to her cherished grandson
Dennis Marsh and dear sister to Margaret Bateman and Mary Eastman.
In 1986 Nancy married Philip Thompson. Philip was a professor of Engineering at RPl in Troy,
NY. They lived in Europe for a period of time when Philip was a visiting professor at various
universities. They also enjoyed cruises and trips to Cape Cod, MA. Unfortunately, Philip was
diagnosed with Alzheimer's and Parkinson's in the late 90's so travel became difficult. Instead
they enjoyed time together in their lovely home, listening to music, reading and enjoying each
other's company. Nancy devotedly cared for Philip at home throughout his long illness.
Nancy continued her love of the outdoors, camping and kayaking in the Adirondacks in the
summer, many times taking her grand-dog Ginger on the adventures. In recent years, with
these adventures no longer possible, she took comfort in the beauty and peace of the woods
surrounding her home.
Nancy was a loving, caring, supportive and generous woman. She had a vivacious, fun-loving
spirit and touched many people's lives. She will be missed by her family very much.
Nancy was predeceased by her parents James and Margaret Kerls, her husband Philip
Thompson, her brother James Kerls, her sister Kathleen Donohoe, her brother-in-law Leonard
Bateman, her brother-in-law Jack Eastman, her sister-in-law Drue Kerls, her former husband
and father of her children John LaBombard Sr, and her friend Thomas Holmes.
In addition to her children and sisters Nancy is survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Nancy's family on Monday April 7th from 9 to 10
a.m. in the day chapel of St. Edward the Confessor Catholic Church, 569 Clifton Park Center
