Mary Leah Carey Mason - BRUNSWICK
Mary Leah Mason, age 96, passed away peacefully at Eddy Village Green in Cohoes on February 20, 2024. Mary Leah was born and raised in South Troy and was a graduate of St. Joseph's Elementary School and Catholic Central High School class of 1945. She was proud of her South Troy heritage and fondly told stories regarding her early life there.
Mary Leah was the daughter of Joseph A. Carey and Marie Leah Navin Maloney. She was the wife of Alex "Bud" E. Mason for 56 years.
Prior to raising her family, Mary Leah was employed by Blue Shield where she became friends with her future sister-in-law, Emma Mason Ashe. Later in life she worked at the Samaritan Hospital, starting in the emergency room followed by many years as a Unit Secretary on the 6th floor. She retired from the Samaritan Hospital in 2017 following 45 years of service. After retiring she enjoyed friendships with her former Samaritan Hospital co-workers.
Mary Leah was a parishioner of Sacred Heart Church in Troy and was active in many capacities within Sacred Heart School as well as the Church. She enjoyed her involvement in the Women's Club, Altar Rosary Society, working on DDP, serving as a lector and eucharistic minister as well as running the school cafeteria.
Mary Leah was a skilled pianist, and in her youth played in a band called the Musical Dolls.
Mary Leah was active with the East Side Seniors and former Troy AARP Chapter 3991, and enjoyed traveling with each group on their bus trips.
Mary Leah is survived by her sons Brian (Lisa) and Ken, her grandchildren Kelly (Pat) McAuliffe and Kevin Mason, and great grandchildren Declan and Kieran in whom she took great joy. She is also survived by her dear friend Alice Swertinski, by dear cousin Anne Marie Bielawa, cousins, and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, Mary Leah was predeceased by her infant son Thomas Mason, brothers Joseph G. Carey and Brother Paul-Allan Carey FSD, and by her daughter-in-law Patricia M. Mason.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Eddy Village Green Cohoes house 6, Our Lady of Mercy Life Center, and Community Hospice for the wonderful care that Mary Leah received. The family also wishes to thank Ida, Wayka, and Nancy for the wonderful caregiving that they provided. Thank you to the Mountain View Volunteer Fire Department for the assistance provided on several occasions.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated for Mary Leah on Friday March 1st in Sacred Heart Church 310 Spring Avenue, Troy at 10:30am. Family and friends are invited to visit with Mary Leah's family in Sacred Heart Church on Thursday February 29th from 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm. Interment will be in Elmwood Hill Cemetery, Troy.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mary Leah may be made to Sacred Heart School or Sacred Heart Church, 310 Spring Ave, Troy, NY 12180.
