James "Jim" Conroy was a man whose life was defined by service, love, and dedication to both his family and community. Born as the eldest son of James Conroy and Mary Rose (Bond) in Troy, NY, Jim’s journey through life was marked by countless acts of kindness and leadership that left an indelible mark on everyone fortunate enough to know him.
A 1965 graduate of Catholic Central High School (CCHS), Jim’s early years were a testament to his character. He was the first CCHS Student Council President and honored as Crusader of the Year for outstanding athletic achievement. As the first member of his family to attend college, Jim continued to break barriers. He graduated from Marist College in 1969, where he was a founding member and the quarterback of the football team—a role that showcased his natural ability to lead and inspire others. His thirst for knowledge and desire to serve led him to obtain a Master’s degree in Public Administration from Russell Sage College.
Jim’s life was deeply influenced by his admiration for President John F. Kennedy, whose call to public service resonated deeply within him. A lifelong public servant, Jim devoted himself to the betterment of his community. His legacy includes serving on the Schenectady County Legislature, the Schenectady City Council, and as Deputy Mayor of Troy, NY.
After retiring from public service, Jim found a second career as an accomplished Commercial Real Estate Broker for Berkshire Hathaway Blake Realty. This new role allowed him to continue serving and promoting Troy helping to shape its future and connect people within the community he loved.
Beyond his public roles, Jim was a devoted husband to Phyllis (Schwab) and a loving father to Jacqueline (Sean) O’Donnell, James (Karen) Conroy, and Charles (Amy) Conroy. He was a proud grandfather to Madeline, Julia, Sophie, Will, and Colin, who were the light of his life. Jim is also survived by his brother Joseph (Patti), brother in-law Michael Wood and was predeceased by his parents and siblings Steven Conroy, and Christine Wood.
Jim’s impact extended far beyond his family. He was an active member of his community, serving on the St. Peter’s Hospital Foundation Board, the Catholic Central Board, Oakwood Cemetery, the Marist College Alumni Board of Directors, and the Troy Area United Ministries. His dedication to these causes was a reflection of his belief in the power of community and his desire to leave the world a better place.
Jim had a way of making everyone feel like a friend. He was so connected to his hometown that no matter where he traveled, he would often bump into someone he knew. He loved introducing himself with his signature phrase: "Jim Conroy, Troy, NY, Nice to meet you." This simple greeting captured the warmth and pride he had for his roots. As an avid golfer, Jim could often be found at Van Schaick Country Club, always striving to improve his game, even if it seemed to stubbornly resist getting any better—a fact that never failed to bring a smile to his face. And on Friday nights, you could count on finding him at the Red Front Restaurant, sharing a meal and lively conversation with friends and family.
In remembering Jim Conroy, we celebrate a life well-lived—a life that touched countless others with kindness, wisdom, and a commitment to making the world a better place. His legacy will live on in the hearts of those who were lucky enough to know him, and his spirit will continue to inspire us all.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Joseph’s Church 416 3rd Street, Troy, NY on Monday at 10 a.m. Friends are invited to visit with Jim’s family on Sunday, 4:30 -7:00 p.m. IN THE CHURCH.
